You probably don’t think about the many ways your life is threatened every day. Whether you think about it or not, you’re always at risk. A natural disaster could threaten your life. You could fall in the path of an unbalanced person with a weapon. Terrorists could strike your building. On a smaller scale, you could get lost on a hiking trail or have a flat tire on a deserted road.

The good news is, your mobile phone can save the day or even save your life.

Most of us carry our mobile phones with us, but few of us think about or practice using our phones in an emergency. We’re not expecting an emergency, naturally, so we don’t take the time to think about what we’ll do if something does happen.

Emergency Emergency

If you have your mobile phone when an emergency hits, your first thought will be to call someone for help. If you’re lost, stranded, or in any other situation where you’re not threatened by another person, check your phone for coverage and try to call for help. If you can’t get a signal initially, and the situation continues, keep trying. You may need to call for immediate police or medical assistance in some situations. Other situations will suggest a call home or to a friend who can come to your aid.

Text Me Out Of Here

Text messages can be very useful in an emergency situation. Your first thought may be that you can send a text message calling for help. If you are threatened by another person, you may be able to quietly get a message out where you could not call for help.

But you don’t have to reserve text messages for situations where you’re being kidnapped. If you’re on a date and feel uncomfortable leaving the restaurant with your date, sending a text message can alert a friend to get you out of there, pronto, without alerting your date or causing a scene.

Incoming SMS messages are becoming more prevalent, and are often used to alert people in a specific area to danger. The FCC has approved a nationwide system to alert US residents to emergencies in their area. Many colleges are now transmitting warnings by SMS when there is an emergency on campus. Having your phone with you and turned on gives you an opportunity to avoid an emergency situation or get help before you’re involved in an emergency.
Mobile phones don’t even have to place calls or send SMS messages to save you during an emergency.

GPS Tracking

In many locations, if you have your phone with you, and you’re unable to speak, emergency personnel can track you through a GPS transmitter in your phone. Sometimes a tragedy could be averted simply by knowing where a person was located when they were lost or injured. GPS tracking can avert these tragedies and help you survive an emergency.

To survive the daily hazards and emergencies life throws your way, keep your mobile phone with you, charged up and turned on. Watch the road when you drive and avoid all distractions that may cause you to lose control of your car. And understand that no one plans to have an emergency. If it was planned, it wouldn’t be an emergency. Take precautions, think ahead, and use your phone to call for help if you find yourself in danger.
