Cellular Operators Association of India (COIA) has declared that the radiation from mobile phones does not pose any health risks for phone users. COIA is the lobbying organization for GSM-based telecommunications service providers in India.
TV Ramachandran, COIA Director said, “It is of paramount importance to note that RF radiations emitted by mobile communications systems lie in the non-ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum and thus do not have enough energy to cause any genetic damage.”
COIA’s statement was directed at parties who have recommended prohibiting the use of mobile phones by children, on the grounds of health risks.
Ramachandran added that the majority of reviews by government agencies and expert panels over the last decade have agreed that there is no scientific basis for banning cell phone use in children. Studies examining the health and safety of mobile communications have not recommended limiting or prohibiting use of mobile phones by children.
The international scientific community as a whole does not recommend banning mobile phone use in children, nor do the World Health Organization (WHO), International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Health Counccil of the Netherlands, or many other international bodies, according to Director Ramachandran.
A recent report recommended banning advertisements showing children and pregnant women using mobile phones. Ramachandran pointed out that no country in the world prohibits such advertising, because there is no conclusive evidence showing a risk to children who use or are exposed to mobile phones.
While patients using medical aids such as pacemakers and defibrillators are urged to avoid mobile phones, Ramachandran points out that this advisory is to avoid interference with the equipment, and not because of a proven health risk.
While many people speculate about health risks from mobile phone radiation, no such risk has yet been proven.
