As someone working in the mobile phone business, I am all too aware of the bad credit mobile phones dilemma. There are times it seems it is easier to buy a house than it is to have “permission” to have a mobile phone contract. Mobile phone companies are extraordinarily strict about the credit check procedure and are quick to refuse a customer a contract if they have even one bad mark against them.
If you are suffering from bad credit history and are struggling to obtain a mobile phone contract there are a few places who can help. With an increasing number of people in the UK having problems with debt, more and more mobile companies are sitting up and taking action.
There are types of bad credit mobile contracts available:
- Low credit score approval - UK network operators are now revising their credit scoring policies due to the ever increasing number of people suffering from credit problems. Some networks like T Mobile and 3 Mobile have a lower credit score approval rate, and are more likely to accept you if you have bad credit.
- No credit check mobile phones – Like many products which are aimed towards people with bad credit, no credit check mobile phones can work out quite expensive. Although you are guaranteed for approval, you end up paying a lot more in calls, texts and charges as well as having restricted handsets to choose from. You should only opt for these types of bad credit mobile phones if you have been turned down by virtually everyone else!
5 Places Where You Can Get Bad Credit Mobile Phones
Although, you are not guaranteed for acceptance with T Mobile, they are reported to be much more sympathetic to people with bad credit history. It has been discussed in several forums, that it is best to apply for their Solo or Flexiplan tariff plans choosing a lower value handset. Depending on how bad your credit history is, you may have some restrictions imposed on your account, but T Mobile are the recommended choice for bad credit mobile phones.
3 Mobile are also known to be more sympathetic to people with adverse credit history. If your credit rating does not pass their credit checks, they will then manually review your application. Depending ony our own individual circumstances, you may then be asked for a deposit of a few months line rental to secure the application.
Although Finance My Mobile do not actually offer mobile phone contracts, they provide you with a guaranteed no credit check loan which allows you to purchase their handsets on finance. You are required to pay an upfront deposit of 10% of the handset price, with additional weekly payments to pay off the balance.
Chance Contracts have been around for a number of years and they offer no credit check applications in return for an upfront deposit of £100. This sum is then paid back to you over a 12 month period, and how quickly it is repaid is dependent on your own repayment patterns.
Phones On Finance will provide you with a no credit check cash loan to buy one of their SIM free handsets. Loan repayments are made on a weekly or monthly basis. Phone On Finance are the most expensive of all the companies with a massive 93% APR rate.

Good post. I have had credit problems for a number of years and have recently been turned down about 5 times for a contract phone. I managed to get a phone with T Mobile and have got Sony Ericsson C902 with 400 minutes and 200 texts. Im happy now!

A contract is what most people use now and getting accepted, Just like mobile phone companies that are very strict on the people they accepted. If you have a bad credit rating it is highly unlikely that they will offer you a contract.

What about using the data usage for voip? Do you think thats a viable option? My iphone contract prohibits it unfortunately. But would be good if i chose to ignore that little fact.
