Global sales of touchscreen phones are expected to hit 90 million handsets in 2009 accounting for 7% of the total number of phones sold, according to data experts Strategy Analytics.
Tom Kand, Senior Analyst said:
Next year, we expect both Apple and Nokia to ramp up shipments and start to lower the price of touchscreen phones towards the mid-range.
Director Neil Mawston added:
Price is not the only factor for success. Screen size is also an important factor. Touchscreens usually perform much better on large size displays above 3 inches in size, as this makes it more accurate and user-friendly. For this reason, touchscreens will be mostly restricted to smartphones and feature phones over the next few years. Mass-market consumers should not expect them on entry level-devices any time soon.
