There has been much hype about Google’s entrance into the mobile industry, and we can all get to see what the fuss is about when the G1 ( also known as the Dream) from HTC is officially unveiled next week. Despite of pessimistic predictions, the first phone to feature theGoogle Android operating system is set to be released on the 23rd of September and in line with the developers original deadline.
According to Reuters.com the HTC G1 will retail for $199 on a 2 year contract with T Mobile and will hit stores a few weeks later. It is unclear if and when the HTC G1 will be released in other regions such as Europe and Asia.
The price of the new Google Android smart phone would put the device head-to-head with Apple’s iPhone which retails at a similar cost, and it will be interesting to see what Google have to offer. The iPhone platform has already received great praise and interest from consumers for their advancements in touch screen technology, popularising of mobile applications and introduction of better internet browsing on phones.
According to Google though, we can expect to see many more Google-powered phones in the future . Google’s long term focus within the mobile industry is to drive up mobile internet use, which will in turn increase search advertising revenue for the search engine giants. In order to acheive this, Google will need to make sure that their Android-driven phones gets in the hands of as many consumers as possible. If the HTC G1 turns out to be as good as it is hyped up to be, we could quite easily see Google playing a major part in the mobile industry.
Largely due to the iPhone revamping of mobile internet browsing, the current phones of today are only now moving from basic mobile search to more advanced internet capabilities. When other manufacturers eventually develop the technology for high speed high quality mobile internet, they will require an operating system, mobile search facilities and other tailored applications. Google will already have these in place and could offer them the answer – Google Android.
