A recently published patent application suggests that Google are planning to rid consumers of being tied down to one particular network and contract. Instead of being connected to just one network, the patent describes plans where a mobile phone, laptop or other wireless device can invite all available networks to bid for your business.
Under the proposed system, devices would send details of their requirements to the network- such as a phone call or Internet browsing – and then receive bids outlining the cost per minute or flat rate which the individual network can offer. The device can then automatically choose the best bid (based on a pre-programmed criteria) or the user can manually accept or decline the bids.
The patent itself does not highlight any specific connection technologies required, and can apply to wireless technologies such as 3G, GSM and Wi-Fi.
The application was originally filed in 2007, but details have only been announced recently.
A Google spokesman said:
“We file patent applications on a variety of ideas that our employees come up with. Some of those ideas later mature into real products or services, some don’t.”
