Google Demonstrates Android OS In London

by Henry on September 17, 2008

With the first Android OS -based handset release just around the corner, Google finally got round to showing the much anticpated operating system up and running on a live handset. They showed the phone yesterday at Google’s Developer Day today in London (for the first time in Europe apparently) and, although the handset’s branding was covered, those present at the event described it as looking ” very much like the HTC Dream” .

The new handset was demonstrated by Mike Jennings and he seemed particularly excited about the fact that you can write your own applications and run them on them handset itself. He also confirmed that the open source Android platform was not solely restricted to mobile phones and could be developed for use in other devices. Jennings later confessed that he already uses one of the Android phones – but not in public. When asked to make call on the Android phone, he quipped:

“I can’t show it off any more, I’ll be out of a job!”

No official release date has been announced yet, but from looking at the video, it looks as though the phone is in its final stages, and an October release could be very possible.
