According to Mobile Choice magazine, Acer, more commonly known for its laptops and PC computers, are set to enter the mobile market with a new handset being released in the first quarter of next next year.
I have to admit, that the prospect of this news does not thrill me. The only experience that I’ve had with an Acer product, is when my girlfriend brought her Acer work laptop home one day, and I spent a few minutes playing around with it. My impressions? Big, noisy and ugly are three adjectives that spring to mind.
Now, it’s good to see new manufacturers entering the phone market and offering us something new and different, but Acer laptops and computers are usually targeted more towards the budget conscious consumer – is there room in the mobile market for the types of low to mid-end handsets that Acer will inevitably offer? Jim Wong, Acer’s senior corporate vice president, seems to think so. He said:
“Leveraging on its global channels and market share in the global PC market, Acer expects the handset business to be a growth driver within three years.”
It will be interesting to see what Acer produce in the next three years. However, based on my own experiences of their products, I doubt they will be offering us the next Nokia N95.
