Nokia have announced plans to introduce its very own mobile television channel, Capsule N96, to be launched on October 1- the same day as the release of the N96.
The Finnish manufacturer have created a series of 96 second programmes on fashion, gadgets, motoring, comedy, culture and homes, in an attempt to showcase the multimedia capabilities of Nokia’s new N96 handset.
Ever since 3G was introduced in 2003, there have been various attempts to convince consumers to watch TV on their mobiles, mostly with limited effect. Vodafone for example, launched their own TV service in partnership with Sky in 2003, providing live streaming to various channels such as Sky Sports and Sky News. Despite giving away a number of free trials, the network operator has failed to capture more than 250,00 subscribers to their service.
However, Simon Ainslie, Nokia UK’s managing director, said that previous attempts at introducing mobile TV were ahead of their time. He explained that increased consumer interest for sites such as YouTube, combined with new handset technology in the last 12 months, and an “all you can eat” pricing plan for mobile access, have now made mobile television a much more viable possibility.
Nokia appears set to challenge the iPhone as leaders of the multimedia sector. Last week, the manufacturer revealed plans of a partnership with the BBC allowing N96 users to watch the popular BBC iPlayer, as well announcing plans for their new Nokia Comes With Music service earlier this month.
