From a recent global survey of 6500 people, Nokia discovered that only 3% recycled their mobile phones, and 50% were completely unaware that their handsets could even be recycled. Hoping to improve these dire statistics, Nokia have introduced the kiosks to both educate the public about recycling and to increase general awareness of environmental issues.

The Integrated Nokia Kiosk’s (INK) have been designed to make the entire process simple for customers, who only have to follow the instructions on the screen. The customer’s name and phone details are taken at the INK to speed up processing, and customers can choose to recycle their old phones as well as leave their current handsets for servicing.

Nellie Abdullah, Nokia Malaysia’s environmental coordinator said:

“The survey revealed that one of the main reasons why so few people recycle their mobile phones is because they simply don’t know that it is possible to do so.”

“In fact, up to 80 percent of any Nokia device is recyclable. Materials such as cobalt, nickel, copper, iron, aluminium, plastics, and even gold can be recovered. It can be reused to help make new products such as steel and other metal products, plastic cones, and in the case of precious metals like gold, into jewellery.”

Nokia have announced will plant one tree for every phone recycled as an extra incentive for people to recycle their old handsets.
