The success of the Nokia N95 has no doubt created lots of anticipation for the next incarnation of the phone; the N96. Rarely since the iPhone has this amount of hype been piled onto the release of a new phone. Both the Nokia N96 and iPhone demonstrate a paradigm shaift from the old mobile “phone”, to the new age mobile entertainment device, which has occurred thanks to new the advance of mobile wi-fi and wider availability of bandwidth and technology.
Is the new Nokia N96 no more than the Nokia N95 with fancier stripes and a new slimmer body? Many mobile phone followers seem to believe that, but is it true? The jury is still out on this question, but the specs seem like enough to take on Apple’s juggernaut.
With Dual ARM 9 264 MHz CPU hardware, the new EDGE, Wi-Fi, 16GB internal memory, DVB-H TV broadcast receiver, improved 5MP camera, and Symbian OS 9.3 upgrades in the mix, the new N96 seems poised to deliver strong enough internals for a solid smartphone experience. It is even expandable with an 8GB microSD space slot.
The phone features touch navigation through an ëAccelerometer sensorí on a 16 colour TFT screen, with TV capable hardware. It is capable of being a GPS receiver device containing enough maps to happily navigate a wanderer around nearly any place on the planet.
The features sound impressive, but the real test will be how it performs under real world conditions when released. Given the impending release of Sony’s 8MP c905 camera phone, Nokia had better keep their heads clear and the goal line in sight. It does have the engine to unseat the iPhone, but several others have made that claim as well, and none have dislodged the Apple giant from its throne. This phone could have a chance to do just that.
The Nokia N96 is set to be released in the UK on the 1st of October.
Available for pre-order at various retailers, including Phones4U.co.uk who have featured an indepth preview of the N96.
