We previously reported that the UK Apple iPhone was made available for the first time on pay-as-you-go, but early indications show that sales of the prepay handset have been much lower than originally anticipated. This has led to concerns from several store employees, who say that the high cost of the phone is to blame.
The first prepaid iPhones were made available with prices starting at £350 for the 8GB and £400 for the 16GB version, but some stores are reporting that not one prepay iPhone has been sold – a week after the device was first launched.
The Carphone Warehouse have admitted that early sales have been slow, with one employee saying:
‘It’s been a disappointment. I work in a store where footfall is around 350 people a day and we’ve sold none yet. There is no box breaking on it this time. In a way it’s the opposite; no-one is buying it.’
