Since the iPhone’s release, mobile browser providers have been in a full scale war to enable their users to surf the internet in full HTML glory, directly on their mobile phones. Major PC and Mac browser providers such as Mozilla, Skyfire, and Opera are all contending to provide the world with a premier application for just such browsing. This pretty much leaves Window’s Mobile built-in browser in the dust.

Things have been changing at Microsoft, however, since the company has been working on Mobile Internet Explorer 6, which the should be released within a few months. With the release of Mobile Internet Explorer 6, we’ll be introduced to a complete overhaul of the browser. The new browser will feature full HTML browsing and even integrated Silverlight support. A few screenshots have been released of the new mobile web explorer and we can honestly say, it’s looking good. It uses the same codebase as the desktop version of IE6, which means you’ll have some seriously powerful browsing capabilities in your mobile device once the browser goes live.

Whether this late overhaul of their existing browser will give Microsoft the edge over competitors such as Mozilla and Opera in the mobile market, only time will tell. You can expect to see Mobile IE6 on handsets before the end of the year.
