A survey commissioned by network operator O2, has revealed that brand names in the financial, retail and manufacturing industries are looking to invest heavily in their mobile marketing efforts over the next 5 years. Despite the economic slowdown, the survey reveals that big brands are looking to increase their mobile marketing budget almost 150% by 2013, in attempts to communicate more effectively with their customers.

Currently, online advertising is more more popular than mobile internet marketing, but 60% of businesses claim that mobile marketing campaigns have a much better response rate than traditional methods, due to the more personal ways they can reach their customers. 88% of marketing directors surveyed, also believe that behavioural targeting will be play an important role in helping them gaining valuable customer insights in the future.

Of all the mobile marketing methods currently being used, SMS marketing is the most popular, with around a third of all businesses using text messages to communicate with both existing and potential customers. These include methods such as text to win competitions (28%) and text to call back campaigns (24%).

O2 UK head of mobile media Simon Dean said:

“As SMS continues to grow, there has never been a better time for brands to engage with their customers via mobile. In today’s economic climate, mobile is proving to be a cost effective, targeted way for businesses to interact with exactly the people they want, from sending a text reminder to alert a customer to an overdrawn bank account to confirming a delivery via SMS.”
