Fujitsu and telecoms company, NTT DoCoMo, have released a prototype of a mobile phone which literally comes apart in your hand, but not the kind of thing that would require a usage of your phone’s warranty.
The “Keitai” may appear to the naked eye like a normal flip phone, but you can actually pull the keypad from the screen thanks to a magnetic hinge built into the unit. Once the two parts are separated, special sensors will pick up on how they are orientated and change the interface to match the orientation. Could be rather useful in many situations.
The touchscreen section can serve as a keyboard, numeric keypad, or even a game controller, which could open new avenues for game development. The concept: You can make calls with one half along with using the other to write emails, and all the while the two can communicate using Bluetooth. Truly ingenious stuff.
This YouTube video shows the phone in action.
