Motorola’s handset business has been struggling for a while now, and there are many strong rumours that they’re looking into developing a new model based on Google’s Android OS. The company is said to be in the process of recruiting experts to implement Android right now. Motorola is one of four handset companies in the Open Handset Alliance, established to promote the operating system.
The first handset using the Google developed operating system, the T-Mobile G1, was released last week and is seen to be only the sunrise in the horizon of a booming mobile market.
Industry viewers say the Android plans would be the most innovative leap Motorola have made since the launch of the smash hit RAZR in 2005. Using the Android platform would also reduce Motorola’s production costs as it would not be required to pay royalties to Google. Reducing costs is always a prime motivator for any company.
Motorla has seen flagging sales in most countries, and have been attempting to separate its mobile handset business from its other entities for some time now. This could be a huge step for the company and could revive them if it succeeds.
