After so many rumours, leaks and speculation about their first ever touchscreen phone, Nokia finally pulled back the curtains today on their new 5800 Xpress Music with an offical unveiling in London. Commonly referred to as The Tube, Nokia’s new 5800 Xxpress Music phone is a direct response to the threat posed by the new HTC G1 phone with its Google Android platform and the huge success of the Apple iPhone.
The handset will feature a 3.2 inch widescreen touchscreen( 6240 x 360 pixels) 16:9 display with upto 16 million colours which supports both finger and stylus touch. A 3,2 megapixel autofocus dual flash Carl Zeiss camera is included, along with a secondary video calling camera, built-in GPS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and 81MB internal memory expandable to 16GB via microSD cards. The 5800 runs S60 5th Edition on Symbian OS 9.5 and measures 111 x 51.7 x 15.5mm and weighs 109 grams.
Nokia also took the opportunity to announce their Comes With Music service, designed to lure consumers away from illegal music downloading and also to challenge the dominance of the popular iTunes. Under the service, users will have unlimited access to 5 million music files, (iTunes have over 8 million) from 4 major music companies and numerous independent labels.
Designed for the pre-pay market, the 5310 Xpress Music phone will go on sale in the UK on October 16 and cost £129.95.
