Sony Ericsson have revealed that their new 8 megapixel C905 device will come preloaded with Mobile Commerce’s NearMe application. NearMe is a local search service which is powered by the GPS capabilities of the handset. With the GPS switched on, the application will automatically work out the exact location of the user and provide access to detailed information such as events, businesses, venues and amenities in the surrounding area.
The application is free of charge and will include UK wide content such as cinema and gig listings, over 11,000 recommended venues for drinking and eating, over 1.9 million business search listings and a fully optimised Multimap to show you the location of the listings. Phone numbers and addresses details are also included, along with the option of storing favourite locations and listing information.
David Hilton, Head of Marketing for Sony Ericsson UK & Ireland said:
“Creating a Java application with best-of-breed content was a key objective to showcase our GPS handsets to our prime target market. Following an extensive market search, we selected Mobile Commerce as our application partner, and we are delighted with the ‘NearMe’ application. We have already defined a roadmap of enhancements to bring even more functionality and choice to our customers.”
This all sounds pretty good to us, and is another interesting feature for the C905 which is already a fairly high specification phone.
