It seems bigger is always better when it comes to tech specs and people shopping online, even if its just about 100% meaningless, either in a technical sense or to the logical mind of the shopper.

Even if we consumers have absolutely no idea what we’re being quoted, what it means or how to actually apply it to real life usage – whether gigahertz to DPI to MP – we always believe that the higher the figure, the better the gadget. This certainly applies to cell phones too.

This is according to a study by the Journal of Consumer Research, which researched the difference between “how we perceive an item based on experience, and how we view the item based on what we know about it”. This includes camera Mega Pixels, EDGE vs. 3G, whatever. The bigger, the fancier the name, the better.

It includes a test involving rather tech-savvy students at a Chinese school, so imagine for a minute how uninformed tech shoppers would respond. It’s a clear signal to companies all they need to do is pump up their numbers and sales would follow.
